As a fit and healthy, high performing and motivated individual we have opportunities for you to begin your career with the AFP as a Police Officer or Protective Service Officer.
It is intended that this register of interest will be used for a minimum of 6 months and is designed to progress suitable applicants through inital entry assessments (including the fitness assessment and the AFP entrance exam), which will be held between –.
This register will replace the previous annual recruitment process and will require you to select one role preference (Police Officer or Protective Service Officer). The preference you select on registering will determine when you will be progressed through recruitment gateways.
The current AFP priority is for Protective Service Officers and we anticipate Protective Service Officer recruit programs from early 2021. The AFP is committed to having a diverse workforce and gender balance and applications from females, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged for these entry level recruit roles.
What you should do in AFP Jobs as a Protective Service Officer?
Protective Service Officer opportunities exist in capital cities and remote locations across Australia. Please Note: No opportunities are available in Brisbane or Hobart;
Protective Service Officers deliver protective security and first response capability to protect Australia’s interests. Following required recruit training you will be required to assess the appropriate law enforcement response for the situation, report and collate relevant data and maintain cooperative relationships with stakeholders and the public when protecting people, assets and critical infrastructure such as Parliament House and key Defence sites.
Policing opportunities exist within ACT Community Policing based in Canberra.
Following completion of recruit training you will be the first point of contact for the public requiring police assistance and will be required to investigate breaches of the law, assess evidence and interview witnesses over the course of investigations. ACT Community Police have a genuine interest in servicing the community in roles such as general duties, community safety, criminal investigations, traffic operations and intelligence.
Eligibility for AFP Jobs 2021 as a Protective Service Officer
Although we welcome registrations from all, you must:
- be an Australian citizen
- be 18 years of age or older. If you are not yet 18 – don’t worry you can still register, however you will be unable to progress through our assessments until your 18th birthday. We will keep in contact with you for future opportunities.
- hold a valid Australian driver’s licence (sorry if you have a learners licence please register once you have your provisional licence)
- have a minimum Year 10 Certificate with Cert IV/Diploma level qualification or Trade Certificate. University level qualifications are also welcomed.

After You register “What Happens”? AFP Jobs
After you have registered and successfully completed both the fitness assessment and entrance exam you will be placed in a high potential candidate pool. This means you have met the entry requirements however you still have some gateways to complete prior to being offered placement on a Policing or Protective Service Officer program. As selections from the pool are often made based on your selected preference, final scores and operational priorities you may remain in the pool until we contact you to submit a more detailed application for an upcoming recruit program.
If you are selected to progress you will be emailed a link to apply for the Entry Level role which will be specified at the time. When applying you will be required to complete an application form, the Employment Suitability Questionnaire and provide some mandatory documents.
