Introduction or History of Visakhapatnam Port Trust
Visakhapatnam was an ancient port city with trade links with the Middle East and Rome. The ships were anchored on open roads and loaded with cargo carrying them from the Visakhapatnam coast via small spice boats. A reference to the Vizagapatam merchant is available in inscriptions from Sri Bhimeshwara Swamy Temple (1068 AD), East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh.
During the 12th century AD, Vizagapatam was a fortified goods town managed by a guild. It became an agreement of a branch of the East India Company in 1682. In 1882-83, goods worth 83 lakhs were transferred via Vizagapatam / Bhimunipatnam. Major commodities traded at the port of Upparaj (East Godavari district), exports of manganese ore to Britain and America, oilseeds, jaggery, jute and Indigo, skins and skins are included. Extensive trade relations existed with Burma.
The existing Inner Harbor was closed by the Bengal Nagpur Railway between 1927 and 1933 to provide a sea outlet for manganese ore from Madhya Nagpur (Madhya Pradesh). The location of the harbor is very ideal in the sense that it is protected from cyclones. Offers that regularly attack the east coast, by a high provincial at sea, known as Dolphin’s Nose Hill North. The maximum tidal range of 1.82 m is also advantageous for the location of the port.
The harbor was constructed by dredging 281.8 million cu.ft. Of land and soft material. It consisted of Outer Channel, Inner Channel, Island Breakwater, Sand Trap, Turning Basin, 1600 ft (3 berth) Quay Wall, Two Transit Sheds, Three Storage Sheds, Open Storage Area, Four Electric Queen Cranes, Three NG Locos, One . Vessels of the British India Steam Navigation Company visited the port regularly. With the advent of British rule, in 1858, a report by the British Survey Party emphasized the need for a port in this part of the country. Later in 1877 a report called Vizag Port of Central Province emphasized the need for the construction of a port at Visakhapatnam.
It was only after the First World War (1914-18) that the proposal of Col.H.artwright Reed of the British Admiralty for the construction of the port at Visakhapatnam at the mouth of the Meghadrigadda River was approved by the government. The unique feature of the port was two old ships JANUS. And by scouring the WELLESDON, the island is break-water, forming a skeleton around which a mound of debris is formed. Two engineers Mr..W.C.Ash and Mr.D.B.Rattenberry were instrumental in making this engineering miracle a reality.
The port was opened to sea traffic with the arrival of SSJALADURGA, a passenger ship of the Scindia Steam Navigation Company, on 7 October 1933. The port was inaugurated by His Excellency Lord Willingdon, the then Viceroy of India and Governor General. On 19 December 1933. In the first year of operation, the port handled 1.3 million tonnes of traffic. Exports were 1.2 lakh tonnes and imports were 0.1 lakh tonnes.
The major exports were manganese ore and groundnut. The imports included rice, flour, tile and other consumer goods. Freight trains were transported through bullock carts. The port assumed military importance during the years of the Second World War (1939–42). After the war and the independence of the country, the planned development of the port began with the commencement of the five-year plans of the country.
Substantial investment was made in the successive five-year plans for infrastructure development in the port.
