History of Nepal Army

Nepal is located along the mountains of the central part of the Himalayas. This rectangular piece of South Asia has served as an important bridge connecting two ancient civilizations of the Asian continent China in the north and India in the south. The land slopes downward from the almost impenetrable and powerful Himalayan wall of the north until it reaches the southern fertile lowland plains.

The narrow track of the lowland plains was once surrounded by thick tropical forest known as Char Kos Showers. This malaria veil kept the settlements closed until recently when the forests were cleared and people from all directions started settling, making it the fastest growing area in the country.

India is located to the south of the Terai. The Mechi river flowing from north to south is the eastern boundary and the Mahakali river forms the western boundary of Nepal. Nepal was ever more elaborate and included the present-day Kumaon and Garhwal and all the hill countries from the west to the Sutlej River.

The recorded history of Nepal begins after 350 BCE. Documented evidence, apart from the scriptures, is not available for the period before that. Different kings of different dynasties like Gopal, Mahishpal, Kirat and Lichhabi ruled this country during the Puranic (ancient) era.

It was common practice to occupy other princely states and invade territories by armed means. Records suggest that the institution of the army began just after 350 CE. In those days, neighboring countries including China, Tibet and the southern states, today known as India, had their own armies.

Nepal also retained its military strength according to documents from the reigns of the major Lichchavi kings, including Mandev, Shiva Dev, Narendra Dev and Anshuvarma. The year 647 AD, at the request of China to invade the southern kingdom by King Narendra Dev Nepal. The support of 7,000 cavalry and 3,500 foot soldiers was increased.
